Why the future of business travel is looking bright
When business travel is changing this fast, it’s important to sometimes take a step back. That’s exactly what happens in this interview with Lee Clissett, head of product at FindHotel, and Aurelie Krau, a consultant at Festive Road.
Talking to Phocuswright’s Jill Menze, they explore the future of business travel while discussing what it’s like to be two of the leaders in the current travel tech industry.
It’s clear that tech has been disrupting the travel industry for a while now — companies like Booking.com and AirBNB have shown that the way forward isn’t defined by brick-and-mortar travel agencies, but rather centralized online hotel bookings and communities of people renting their rooms to each other.
However, something that’s been happening more recently is the interest of other tech companies in the travel space — large corporations like Google that originally haven’t done much with travel are now also doubling down on their offerings. Features like Google Flights and Hotels are meant to make it easier for users to find the best options for their next trip, while making money through affiliate sales and ads.
Something else that’s touched on in the interview is the appearance and constant change of online platforms that are influencing the travel industry. Instagram and Facebook, for example, are changing the ways people are discovering content, companies and destinations they want to travel to. Also, they’re incredibly influential in defining how we communicate with each other — Facebook’s Messenger is used by 1.3 billion people every month, and it’s constantly adding new features like chatbots that automatically reply to user input. Travel companies are quickly picking up on these things, for example by launching conversational booking tools that work through messaging platforms.
